I love how these gifs take a moment to see them both falter. Up until this moment Elijah’s been running since the ball on his own gut, centuries of survival instincts, and, get this, fear. This has him in default mode with at least thirty different plans in motion to save his desperately awaited siblings, by the time he rings Elena’s doorbell. But then Elijah sees Elena and is a bit stunned. (What light through yonder door breaks! It is the east! And Elena is the sun! (I had to)). YOU, King Original (lbr), who probably had twenty different plans to have your coffee this morning. You remember when you sliced off Trevor’s head (and it was awesome and iconic!) because his only loyalty had been to his lovesick heart? I bet that Elijah is laughing at you but in this moment you could not give a darn. I want to hold up a mirror and ask, Why are you here again? It’s not to ask Elena on a date? Are you sure? Because it looks like your brain just wants to delete everything in the past twenty four hours, say ‘um, nothing my bad,’ leave awkwardly, and live in a delusional state where everything is perfect and you got it all (until you and your desperately awaited siblings drop dead at moonrise that is). And at the end of the episode, you aren’t even sure if you shouldn’t have just listened to that voice after all. Esther made you take a look at yourself and looking back in the mirror wasn’t the person you’ve been trying to believe it is. That person not only selfishly and impulsively breaks promises - that you could justify, you’re good with justifying - but hurt an innocent and manipulated your sister, two things your already morally ambiguous code said ‘don’t,’ and didn’t care. That is what freaks you out, because if you’re that person just how different are you from Klaus? That is some messed up confusion. Elijah’s character might be tangled in dopplegangers, but his character development is Elena-related all the way.

Elena likes being with him. She likes how he sees her, a lot; and that is important, because this whole season she has been struggling with how people see her and how that lines up with what she sees in the mirror herself! Neither of which have been going very well for her, because neither have proved to be people she likes very much. She’s scared and anxious, she knows this isn’t what it looks like (it’s Elijah, and she can sense his tension). But she likes being by his side, she likes his smile, she likes him. Realizing that, again, is just as horrible as it was the first time to swallow (or pardon the pun, to let him swallow last episode). It makes her stop, because what is she doing out here? One can’t just delete the past twenty-four hours (or four months, because face it, Elijah makes her feel like the Elena before the sacrifice and Elena misses her), just because you don’t want to face them, and she knows she’s weakening; she should turn, run, and call Damon or Bonnie to keep her from doing what she’s screaming inside to do. But the longer she’s with him - instead of easier, instead of reminding her why all of the Originals need to die (they are abominations of nature, they’re murderers, Klaus plans to mate and drain her like a cow), it’s even harder to stomach letting him die. Her vision narrows. Isn’t she an abomination of nature, too? Hasn’t she lost enough because of Klaus (Bonnie, Jenna, her bio father, her bio mother, Stefan, Jeremy, Caroline, Alaric, her own life)? Hasn’t she given up enough at the altar and been left with nothing? she asks, and subtracts Elijah’s agency in that (so in character for Elena, she is the queen to Elijah’s king of justifying actions no matter how hypocritical they are). Instead of steeling her, that also only makes it more difficult. She feels too much, and she feels all the time. Before, that was all right, that was her strength; but now the person in the mirror leads her down roads of destruction for her and the lives of everyone she loves. I think we’re finally beginning Elena’s long awaited PTSD break down, and the straw to break the camel’s back can be traced back to sacrificing Elijah Mikaelson.

Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. Well-put! I’ll probably end up rewatching their scenes now so I can reanalyze them.
